Kill the idea that naivety is an unforgivable flaw but cynicism is just wisdom, murder it, chop it up and serve it for dinner, I don’t care, just end this bullshit idea that it’s better to hate than to love and better to rot in miserable bitter resignation than to hope for the best.

I’ve had the idea for an Airbender for a while now, and I always imagined her as a part of the Legend of Korra era, but it was never possible canonically. Until now. Since Harmonic Convergence brought about airbenders (woohoo!!), Serin the Airbender can now be born into the world of Avatar. When she learns of her airbending skills, she’s probably about seven or eight.

Serin is a child of two Earth Kingdom natives, but was raised in Republic city. She was born a non-bender, but after Harmonic Convergence, she received the ability to Airbend. She’s a crybaby, is easily frightened, and is very sensitive to people’s true intentions. She is fairly intelligent and observant, but is mostly illiterate. Eager to learn and to please people she likes, Serin can be coaxed out of her shell with kind words and a truthful heart. She’s not one for conflict and will often hide when a disagreement occurs.

As far as designing her clothes, I was influenced by the westernization of China in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Whether or not they are stylistically appropriate for LoK, I took that less into account. She’s dressed in male clothing, since she receives hand me-downs from her older siblings, who are all male. The clothes are worn and not often cleaned.

I think the “women are mysterious” thing can also come from:
1) Women actually being quite clear, but not telling men what they want to hear.  ”She said she doesn’t want to talk to me?  So many mixed messages and confusing signals!”
2) Women not having cheat codes.  ”I tried being nice, and she didn’t have sex with me.  I tried being an asshole, and she didn’t have sex with me.  Come on, there’s got to be some kind of solution to this puzzle!”
3) Women not being a hive mind.  ”First a woman told me that she likes guys with big muscles.  Then the very next day a woman told me she thinks muscles aren’t attractive at all.  Make up your mind, women!”
4) An individual woman doing something confusing, and instead of asking “why is she doing this now?” men ask “why do women always do this?”

イーブイ, the “evolution” Pokemon, is the only existing Pokemon that can evolve into any of eight various Pokemon. Eevee is possibly based on the folklore of Tanuki, which is said to be able to transform; in addition, Eevee may derive from the concept of dog breeding, or perhaps a fox’s ability to adapt to extreme environments, thus undergoing changes that suit the surroundings.

I’ve received a lot of letters from artists asking to check out their artwork and their blog, and I’ve noticed that a lot of them openly write unhealthy amounts of negative comments about their artwork, it was super depressing, honestly.  :(
Confidence plays a very very important role as an artist, it’s what helps us learn and grow without the constant feeling of doubt and jealousy!  You are a unique individual who must go down your own unique path, and as scary as it sounds, you can’t rely on others to hold your hand all the way through.  You are the only one who can get yourself to where you need to go, and beating up your artwork is not the way!  Trust yourself and your abilities to make a change, and you can do anything!!

Love your art, love yourself!

I was actually going to write a long post about this yesterday, but this lovely comic sums up all my points perfectly! Artists, please read this! It can be hard to break out of your bad “my art sucks” habits, but you gotta try. I used to do that ALL THE TIME, but a few years ago I made a conscious effort to change and I feel my art is much better for it. It’s not easy, it’ll take practice, but it’s worth it. Love your art!
